The vinyl cast of my vehicle is an exercise in decay-endurance; the cast-material is designed to remain as a protective skin, much like a car can be a protective shell for a human. I meticulously remove the car, leaving only a skin-like shell that is inflated until it ruptures and caves in. The work is inherently temporary. Because of the constant pressure from the wheel-well fan inflation, it gradually destroys itself over the course of the exhibition. Depending on the temperature and conditions in the space (and ideally with the fans running continuously), it typically lasts anywhere from about two weeks to a month. As a result, the piece has to be remade from scratch each time it is exhibited.
